Student Residence Advisers (SRAs)
I have some mental health concerns – who can I speak to? In halls, your SRAs will be the easiest people to contact if you have any wellbeing concerns. They can provide you with peer-to-peer guidance and signpost you to UCL support services. They are on duty 6pm-8am on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.
You can contact your SRA in person when they are on duty, online by submitting the non-urgent appointment with an SRA request form or through the SafeZone app.
For expert advice, you should speak to the Student Support & Wellbeing Services team (SSWS) by logging an enquiry via askUCL
UCL 24/7 Student Support Line If you need to speak to someone in-the-moment, UCL offers a 24/7 support line.
Should I talk to my GP? You should speak to your GP to discuss medical concerns related to your mental health. They will be able to refer you to specialists, if needed.
If you are seeking medical intervention, it may be worth speaking to SSWS before contacting your GP, as they can provide letters of recommendation that may strengthen your referral to specialist services.
I think my problem is too small to bother anyone with. No problem is too small to talk to someone about! Just like with your physical health, it is important to identify and address problems early. You can speak to your SRAs and SSWS. They are here to support you no matter how small your concern.
International Students and the NHS The UK healthcare system may work differently to the one in your home country. Before you arrive, familiarise yourself with how to access healthcare in the UK through the NHS.
Medical Emergencies in Halls
An emergency is something that poses an immediate risk to a person’s life or health.
If you have an emergency, call 999 for the Police, Ambulance Service or Fire Brigade. This is a free service. You should also inform the hall team or SRA team about any emergency, as soon as you can.
If it is not an emergency but you need medical help, you can call the National Health Service (NHS) helpline on 111.
SafeZone App
The quickest and easiest way to access emergency help at all time around UCL is by installing the SafeZone app on your phone. This allows you to easily request emergency assistance on campus and in UCL halls.
As you are in a hall run by Unite or Urbanest, you will be outside the coverage of SafeZone. Nonetheless, we strongly recommend installing the app as you will be able to use it on campus.
Worried about someone?
If you have concerns about someone else (it is great that you are looking out for those around you!), contact your hall team or SRA, or call 999 if it is an emergency.

Safety

Fire Alarm Tests
The fire alarm in your hall will be tested each week. You can find details of when these will be conducted in reception. We understand that these may be irritating, but they are necessary to ensure we can keep you safe.
Smoking or Vaping
Please only smoke or vape in the designated areas. Smoking or vaping in the lift or fire escape is prohibited and will set off the alarm.
Prohibited Items
To reduce the risk of fire, we do not allow you to bring the following items into halls:
  • Candles
  • Humidifiers
  • Portable heaters
  • 3D printers
  • E-scooters & e-bikes
A full list of other prohibited items can be found in the relevant General Regulations on the fees, guidance and payment webpage.
Fire alarms
Any person found interfering in any way whatsoever with firefighting equipment or alarms in UCL Accommodation or Halls other than for proper use, will be committing a serious breach of the terms of their Licence Agreement.
Compliance - UUK Code
UCL adheres to the Student Accommodation Code, which sets out the main elements of good management practice for student housing in the Higher Education sector. A full version of the code is available on the Student Accommodation Code website.
