며칠전 4월 4일(현지시간) 미국 뉴저지 주정부가 긴급 구인 공지를 띄웠다. 주지사까지 나서서 주정부에게 닥친 재정 위기를 구원할 해결사를 찾고 있는 상황이다. 그 해결사는 현재 기준으로는 꽤 생소한 코볼(COBOL) 프로그래머다. 범용 비즈니스 지향 언어(COmmon Business-Oriented Language)라는 고색찬연한 이름의 약자인 코볼은 1959년 해군 장교(후에 해군 제독까지 올라갔다)이자 여성 프로그래머인 그레이스 호퍼(Grace Hopper)가 개발한 프로그래밍 언어다.
