Although relatively short, The Prince is Machiavelli’s most widely known work; the term “Machiavellianism” (often used pejoratively) originates from here.
It has often been claimed that the purpose of The Prince is simply to endorse a ruler’s ends and thereby justify immoral means; however, this view overlooks Machiavelli’s more specific ideas. Italian unification, improving ordinary people’s lives, and the founding of a new state.
