Securities are certificates that aim for circulation and specify legal rights to claim valuable items. Documents that cannot be circulated, such as promissory notes and stamps, are not considered securities. Examples include stocks, bonds, commercial papers, index futures and options, and mortgage-backed securities. Some items are securities but not capital securities because, although they circulate, they are not issued for capital raising purposes, like checks and gift certificates.
