The subscription economy was driven by investment structures, but as AI dramatically reduces software production costs, most subscriptions without continuous value are collapsing, leaving only utility-based and continuous information-generating models. Downward → Ownership. Upward → Continuous intelligence. The argument is that mid-tier SaaS subscription models in between are collapsing. The subscription economy operates on a "dependency architecture." Subscriptions are not just a pricing model, but a structure that locks in users.
Subscription models will only survive in two places:
- True utilities (electricity, broadband, and other ongoing resource delivery)
- Fresh context providers (irreplaceable information that is continuously updated)
Anything in the middle that charges recurring fees for static products will collapse under three forces: income pressure, content exhaustion, and AI-driven repricing.
