Tunnels are implemented using protocols that support tunneling and provide security features like a private network.
Protocols that support tunneling include PPTP (Point-to-point Tunneling Protocol), a layer 2 tunneling protocol, L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol), L2F (Layer 2 Forwarding Protocol), IPSec (IP Security Protocol), a layer 3 (network) tunneling protocol, MPLS, GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation), and additionally, there is SSL VPN, a layer 7 (application, specifically between layers 4 to 7) protocol.
