 GP (General Practitioners)

General Practitioners (GP)
Your first contact point for medical concerns will be your GP (general practitioner/doctor). They are based in surgeries (also called practices).
How do I find a GP to register with?
You can use the NHS GP finder tool to find a surgery nearby. We recommend registering with a GP close to where you live.
Where can I buy medicine?
Medicine can be purchased from pharmacies. You can find your nearest pharmacy using the NHS pharmacy finder tool. You may need a prescription to purchase certain medication.
In the UK, some non-prescription medication (e.g., paracetamol, ibuprofen, allergy tablets) can be purchased from supermarkets.
Meningitis and MMR
All students are recommended to have the Meningitis ACWY vaccine before they arrive. If you have not had this vaccine, UCL recommends that you contact your local GP. You should get vaccinated during the first two weeks of term as the vaccine takes time to become effective.
Students should ensure they have received two doses of the MMR (mumps, measles and rubella) vaccine. This is usually given to children worldwide as part of the routine immunisation schedule. Your doctor can provide this vaccine if eligible.
International Students and the NHS
The UK healthcare system may work differently to the one in your home country. Before you arrive, read up on how to access healthcare in the UK through the NHS.
