Universal Polar Stereographic
The Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) coordinate system divides the Earth into a grid using the following specifications:
- Grid Structure
- Divides the Earth into vertical strips at 6° longitude intervals using the Transverse Mercator projection
- Further subdivides into a 60×20 grid at 8° latitude intervals
- Uses orthogonal coordinates relative to reference points established for each vertical zone
- Coverage Area
- Specifically designed for mapping polar regions
- Covers areas beyond UTM limits: north of 84°N and south of 80°S
- Technical Characteristics
- Employs conformal projection with rectangular grid system
- Uses metric units for measurements
