Scientists Use "Acoustic Holograms" To Form Particles Into Complex 3D Shapes
By manipulating high frequency sound waves, scientists were able to create shapes ranging from a helix to a figure 8 out of particles suspended in water.

High-speed acoustic holography with arbitrary scattering objects. Levitation over obstacles! 1/3
HIGH-SPEED, ACOUSTIC HOLOGRAPHY WITH ARBITRARY SCATTERING OBJECTS. Find out more here: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abn7614 #technology #scienceadvances #levitation #levitating #acoustic #holography #soundwave For the first time, UCL researchers show how sound waves can be used to levitate and manipulate objects quickly, even with objects obstructing the sound field. Previous research has already shown that levitation is not just for Harry Potter. Objects can be moved in mid-air using the force from high intensity ultrasound waves to hold something in place, also known as acoustic levitation. This technique also makes it possible to create interactive 3D images, such as holograms, in mid-air that you can see, feel and hear. However, until now, this could only be done in an empty space; anything in the way of the soundwave would cause the levitated objects to fall. For the paper, published in Science Advances, the research team has gone one step further by showing how acoustic manipulation is possible outside of such a controlled environment. Levitation and acoustic control can be achieved in real-world scenarios, integrating external objects such as nearby walls, the dashboard of a car or other common appliances.
