2009년 비트코인의 등장으로 '암호화폐'라는 개념이 수면 위로 떠올랐다. 하지만 그로부터 10여 년이 지난 지금, 암호화폐는 여전히 일상적인 거래 수단으로서 자리잡지 못하고 있다. 암호화폐 중에서도 비트코인처럼 일부 코인만이 결제가 가능하도록 시설이 구비되어 있는데 이마저도 상점 수가 많지 않다. 비트코인의 가격도 등락을 반복하니 익숙한 법정화폐를 두고 낯선 암호화폐를 사용할 이유가 없다.
