Zoom is adding live translation and an expanded whiteboard feature to its apps in the next year. Live translation will support 12 languages by the end of next year, while the Zoom Whiteboard for collaborative drawing will launch in beta later in 2021.

Zoom now has an SDK for putting Zoom into other things
Zoom has released a new SDK (software development kit) to help developers build Zoom into their software. According to the company, you can now build your own "video-based applications and websites" on top of Zoom's platform and can more easily incorporate Zoom's video and audio features directly into your apps.

The Zoom installer let a researcher hack his way to root access on macOS
A security researcher has found a way that an attacker could leverage the macOS version of Zoom to gain access over the entire operating system. Details of the exploit were released in a presentation given by Mac security specialist Patrick Wardle at the Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas on Friday.

Detects whether third-party apps like Chrome (Google Meet) are in a meeting by reading OS-managed microphone usage records (metadata), without directly eavesdropping on the mic or analyzing audio
- macOS: Monitors the Control Center sensor notification log (
/usr/bin/log stream) to determine whether Chrome is accessing the microphone.
- Windows: Reads the user registry (
CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone) to check which apps are currently using the microphone.
- No permissions required: Both methods can be queried with ordinary user privileges, without root/admin rights or Zoom's own microphone access permission.
- Key implication: It shows that OS privacy-monitoring features introduced to protect users can conversely be abused to track other apps' activity.
How Zoom Detects Google Meet Without Microphone Access
Zoom uses macOS Control Center logs and Windows microphone privacy records to detect when other applications use the microphone.
