2024's Biggest Breakthroughs in Physics
The year's biggest breakthroughs in physics included evidence that dark energy may be weakening, the discovery of a supersolid, and new advances in quantum geometry. Read more at Quanta Magazine: https://www.quantamagazine.org/the-year-in-physics-20241217
0:06 - Weakening Dark Energy
A generation of physicists has referred to the dark energy that permeates the universe as “the cosmological constant.” Now, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has produced the largest map of the cosmos to date — hinting that this mysterious energy has been changing over billions of years.

5:51 - Supersolids in the Lab
New observations of microscopic vortices, known as quantum tornadoes, confirm the existence of a paradoxical phase of matter that may also arise inside neutron stars.

11:09 - Quantum Geometry
A decade after discovering the "amplituhedron," physicists have excavated more of the timeless geometry underlying the standard picture of how particles move. A new shape called the "associahedron" gives an alternative to calculating scattering amplitudes with Feynman diagrams.

Sound waves in space: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations
The baryon acoustic oscillation signal is one of the few imprints from the Big Bang we can still see in the universe. They form from initial density perturbations in the early universe expanding out like sound waves whilst the universe was small and hot enough that matter acted like a fluid. These ripples froze out when the universe expanded enough that pressure waves could no longer travel in space, and we can still see these ripples in the universe today! They are imprinted in an excess of galaxies separated at a size which is a combination of this ripple radius and the expansion of the universe. We can calculate the size of the ripple, and so mapping out how big the separation is in the modern universe tells us how much it has expanded in the last 13.8 billion years!
