PoW solved the initial value proposition of cryptocurrency through the concept of computational work, while PoS addressed the issue of maintaining currency value by assigning intrinsic value through contributions to the cryptocurrency network and society. This should be viewed more as a historical progression rather than simply different consensus algorithms.
