In the 1980s, microwaves were considered futuristic technology that would completely replace gas stoves, and there were actual attempts to cook everything with microwaves (microwave-specific cookbooks, browning pans, etc.). The author experimented by following old microwave cookbooks to experience that "alternate timeline," and found that dishes like steak and eggs are quite feasible with the right containers and efficient for single-person cooking
