The word "tempura" sounds Japanese but actually originated from Portugal. It comes from "Quattuor Tempora," a religious observance where people ate fried foods during the four seasonal ember days. When asked what they were eating during this three-day ritual, they would say they were observing "Quattuor Tempora," which eventually became "tempura". Similar to how "kangaroo" got its name, but the kangaroo story is actually false and the name does come from the indigenous language.
