Emotions are a value judgment system. When the emotional center vmPFC is damaged, one becomes unable to make any judgments or decisions. Rather than feeling emotions through reason, we judge and think based on emotions, which is why when we receive information that contradicts what we know, we feel personally attacked. As a result, based on these negative emotions, regardless of logic, we create justifications and excuses with Consistency Bias to protect our identity (Introspection Illusion). Persuading someone means changing their thoughts, and since this means changing the person themselves, it's a difficult task.
Ventromedial prefrontal cortex
The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is a part of the prefrontal cortex
in the mammalian brain. The ventral medial prefrontal is located in the frontal lobe at the bottom of the cerebral hemispheres and is implicated in the processing of risk and fear, as it is critical in the regulation of amygdala activity in humans. It also plays a role in the inhibition of emotional responses, and in the process of decision-making and self-control. It is also involved in the cognitive evaluation of morality.
